Oprah didn't discover this treatment, but it sure seems like it the way everyone has started talking about it!

The results of the Women's Health Initiative study in 2002 suggesting that the risks of hormones may outweigh the benefits had millions of women stopping their hormones overnight. And just as quickly, hot flashes returned, thermostat settings were lowered, and bedcovers were thrown off in homes everywhere.

Yet two recent segments on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" touting the benefits of hormones have women scrambling to get prescriptions again from their doctors. The hormones Oprah's guests were applauding, called: Bio Identical Hormone  Replacement Therapy!

For two years, Oprah suffered from menopausal symptoms and a low thyroid condition.  She wasn't feeling herself, and doctors she consulted had no answers.   In less than three days after starting on bio- identical hormones, her menopausal problems were gone and she was singing praises.  Now, Oprah is bringing her experiences into the national consciousness with her Jan. 15, 2009 television show which highlighted bio identical hormones.

Hormone Pellets
Data supports that hormone replacement therapy with pellet implants is an effective method to deliver bio-identical hormones to both men and women. Pellets are placed underneath the skin. They consistently and gradually release small, physiologic doses of hormones thus providing optimal therapy. Pellets are made up of estradiol, testosterone, and progesterone. The hormones are pressed or fused into very small solid cylinders. These pellets are larger than a grain of rice but smaller than a ‘Tic Tac’. Pellets deliver healthy levels of hormones for approximately 5-6 months. They avoid the fluctuations, or ups and downs, of hormone levels seen with other methods of delivery. Pellets do not increase the risk of blood clots like conventional or synthetic hormone replacement therapy.

Pellets have been shown to be Excellent for relief of menopausal symptoms, maintenance of bone density, restoration of sleep patterns, and improvement in sex drive, libido, sexual response and performance.

Testosterone delivered by a pellet implant, has been used to treat migraine and menstrual headaches.  It also helps with vaginal dryness, incontinence, urinary urgency and frequency. In both men and women, testosterone has been shown to increase energy, relieve depression, increase sense of well being, relieve anxiety and improve memory and concentration.   Testosterone, delivered by pellet implant, increases lean body mass (muscle strength, bone density) and decreases fat mass.  Men and women need adequate levels of testosterone for optimal mental and physical health and for the prevention of chronic illnesses like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, which are associated with low testosterone levels.

Even patients who have failed other types of hormone therapy have a very high success rate with pellets. Pellets have been used in both men and women since the late 1930’s

Pellets are frequently used in Europe and Australia where pharmaceutical companies produce pellets. Most of the research on pellets is out of Europe and Australia . Pellets were frequently used in the United States from about 1940 through the late 70’s when oral patented estrogens were marketed to the public. In fact, some of the most exciting data on hormone implants in breast cancer patients is out of the United States . Even in United States ,there are clinics that specialize in the use of pellets for hormone therapy.

The insertion of pellets is a simple, relatively painless procedure done under local anesthesia. The pellets are usually inserted in the lower abdominal wall or upper buttocks through a small incision, which is then taped and closed.

After the insertion of the implants, vigorous physical activity is avoided for 48 hours in women and up to 5 to 7 days in men. Early physical activity is a cause of ‘extrusion’, which is a pellet working it’s way out.  Antibiotics may be prescribed if a patient is diabetic or has had a joint replaced. However, this is a ‘clean procedure’ and antibiotics may not be needed.
.

Sometimes, it is necessary to use an pellets or implants made of estrogen. This is a compounded substance where each pellet consists of a hard crystal of 17 beta estradiol-- the natural estrogen produced by the human ovary, which releases into the blood stream, attains a steady state, and then will get used up as the estrogen is metabolized in the body. This will provide a very steady estrogen level of approximately 150 - 250 pictograms per ml, which is a therapeutic level. There have been no adverse effects demonstrated.,once the patients have been stabilized, the number of physician visits and the number of tests for these patients declined dramatically, most patients requiring pellets two to three times a year and requiring very little in the way of other medical therapy in between times.

Progesterone is a C-21 steroid hormone involved in the female menstrual cycle, pregnancy (supports gestation) and embryogenesis of humans and other species. Progesterone belongs to a class of hormones called progestogens, and is the major naturally occurring human progestogen.

Many of the so-called "modern" diseases can be prevented or overcome by progesterone therapy. Progesterone is made in your body from cholesterol. Here are the essentials of the process ...first, your body turns the cholesterol into pregnenolone. Pregnenolone is then converted to progesterone. Your body then makes a cascade of other hormones that it needs from the progesterone (these include the estrogens and testosterone amongst others) This is the vital point to understand... "progesterone is an essential raw material from which your body makes many of the other hormones vital for good health"

Will hormone therapy with estradiol and testosterone pellets help with hair loss?
Hormone deficiency is a common cause of hair loss and treatment with estradiol and testosterone implants can help to re-grow hair.   Hair becomes thicker and less dry with pellet therapy.

How long until a patient feels better after pellets are inserted?  Some patients begin to ‘feel better’ within 24-48 hours while others may take a week or two to notice a difference.  Diet and lifestyle, along with hormone balance are critical for optimal health.  Stress is a major contributor to hormone imbalance and illness.

How long do pellets last? The pellets usually last between 3 and 5 months in women and 4-6 months in men. The pellets do not need to be removed. They completely dissolve on their own.  .

How are hormones monitored during therapy?  Hormone levels will be drawn and evaluated before therapy is started. This will include a FSH, estradiol, testosterone and free testosterone for women.  Thyroid hormone levels may also be evaluated. Men need a PSA, sensitive estradiol, testosterone, liver profile and blood count prior to starting therapy. Levels will be reevaluated during hormone therapy, usually prior to insertion of the next set of pellets, 4-5 months.

When compared to the cost of drugs to treat the individual symptoms of hormone decline, pellets are very cost effective. There is more good, ‘unbiased’ data on pellets and bone density than any pharmaceutical drug on the market.

It is never too late to benefit from hormone therapy.
